The Ashen Sea — Stillness at the Edge of the Storm
Low and wide, this chawan sits on the table like a horizon — calm on the surface, distinctive within. Its exterior is a volcanic landscape of deep olive-grey and iron-brown, erupting in dense white mineral formations across the lower half like sea foam frozen in clay. But it is the interior that stops you: a field of deep blue-grey crawled glaze, fractured into a thousand interlocking scales — like the skin of something ancient, or the surface of a dried seabed seen from above.
Glaze & Surface: The exterior glaze is a complex layering of deep olive-grey and umber, scattered with dense white ash glaze deposits that have pooled and crystallised across the belly of the cup — textural, tactile, and impossible to replicate. The surface is rough and dimensional, with subtle pitting and mineral variation throughout. At the rim, the glaze transitions dramatically: the interior edge is coated in a dense, snakeskin-patterned crawled glaze in deep blue-grey — tightly cracked into interlocking cells, smooth within each cell but collectively creating a mesmerising reptilian texture that rings the entire inside of the cup. The interior deepens to a rich grey-blue, quieter toward the base, with the crawled pattern fading into a smoother, more meditative finish.
Form & Feel:
- Wide, low chawan form — open and generous, well suited to two-handed holding
- Strongly inward-curving rim with irregular, hand-pinched waves along the edge
- 370g weight — substantial and grounding
- Thick walls with excellent heat retention
- Unglazed stoneware foot ring — raw and honest beneath
For the Art of Tea: The wide chawan form was made for matcha — open enough for the whisk, deep enough to hold the bowl's warmth in your palms. The interior crawled glaze creates a visual spectacle as the tea pools and swirls within it. It is equally beautiful used for gongfu cha or simply as a vessel for a quiet moment. Look into it long enough and you may find it looking back.
One of a kind. Wood-fired in a single kiln firing. Never to be repeated.
