The Coral Frost Cup — Fine as Coral, Cold as Frost

Among all the cups in this collection, this one has the most consistently developed crawled glaze — fine, dense, and evenly distributed across every surface, like the branching structure of coral seen under water, or the craze-pattern of ice just before it breaks. It is a cup that rewards close looking. The closer you get, the more there is to see.

Glaze & Surface: The exterior is covered in a dense field of small, rounded white crawled glaze fragments, separated by fine iron-brown networks that trace between them in organic, branching lines. The scale of the crawled fragments is finer and more even than most cups in this firing — the result is a surface that has a textile-like consistency, almost woven in appearance. At the rim, a thick band of blue-grey lustrous glaze has pooled and set — metallic and smooth against the textured body below, it creates a strong visual and tactile transition that makes the cup immediately distinctive. The interior carries the same crawled glaze extending inward from the rim, white fragments against dark ground, with a similar blue-grey accumulation just inside the lip.

Form & Feel:

  • Full, round chawan form — wide-bellied, slightly narrowing at the rim
  • Slightly irregular rim — naturally hand-formed, with gentle undulation
  • 250g weight — solid and well-balanced
  • Highly textured exterior — the fine crawled glaze is very satisfying to hold
  • Small unglazed foot ring — dark stoneware, neat and stable

For the Art of Tea: The wide, round form makes this an excellent everyday chawan — comfortable for matcha, gongfu cha served as a sharing bowl, or any tea you drink slowly. The blue-grey rim glaze is particularly beautiful when the cup is warmed — it deepens in colour as the heat rises. Hold it in both hands and take your time.

One of a kind. Wood-fired in a single kiln firing. Never to be repeated.
