The Snow Rock Bowl — A Landscape Held in Clay

This is a cup that looks like it was pulled from the earth rather than thrown on a wheel. Its surface erupts in a thick, dramatic Shino crawled glaze — white as fresh snow, fractured into a thousand irregular islands, each one separated by a dark web of iron-black where the underlying clay breathes through. It is rugged, tactile, and entirely its own.

Glaze & Surface: The exterior is encrusted in a densely crawled white Shino glaze — the glaze has contracted dramatically during firing, pulling apart into raised, rocky formations that beg to be touched. Deep charcoal and iron-brown show through every crack and gap, creating a striking monochrome landscape of light and shadow. The overall effect is like a frozen tundra seen from above, or lichen-covered rock just after snowfall. The interior transitions to a quieter mood: a soft blue-grey-white, with a ring of dark fire marks tracing the rim's interior edge and a smooth white pool gathering at the base.

Form & Feel:

  • Wide, generous chawan form with a naturally pinched and irregular rim — shaped entirely by hand
  • Substantial 400g weight — one of the heaviest in the collection, deeply grounding
  • Exceptionally thick walls for superior heat retention
  • Broad, stable base — sits with quiet authority on the tea table
  • Unglazed foot ring reveals the raw dark stoneware beneath

For the Art of Tea: The wide-open chawan form invites you to slow down. Cradle it in both hands, feel the texture of the crawled glaze against your palms, and let the tea cool to the perfect temperature before drinking. This cup is particularly well-suited to matcha — its wide mouth and open form allow the whisk to move freely, and the pale interior lets the green of the tea shine.

One of a kind. Wood-fired in a single kiln firing. Never to be repeated.
