The Deep Blue Eye — Shino Wood-Fired Tea Pitcher

Made for the final, generous gesture of a tea gathering, this Shino wood-fired tea pitcher, known as a gong dao bei or tea fairness cup, receives brewed tea and lets you share it evenly among cups. Its rounded body and shaped pouring lip make it a dedicated serving vessel for already-brewed tea. The saturated cobalt glaze gives this one-of-a-kind piece the depth of dark water, shifting with the light.

Glaze & Surface: Rich cobalt blue covers the exterior, punctuated by iron-brown eruption spots and flowing streaks where glaze ran and pooled in the kiln. A dark iron-grey mineral crust traces the rim. Inside, midnight blue glaze is flecked with dark firing marks, like clouds moving across a deep ocean.

Form & Function:

  • Compact, rounded tea pitcher with a naturally formed pouring spout
  • Wide open mouth for receiving brewed tea and rinsing after use
  • Thick, sturdy walls and a comfortable heft in the hand
  • Unglazed foot ring reveals the dark stoneware clay body
  • Designed to hold and distribute brewed tea evenly among cups

For the Ritual of Tea: Set it at the centre of the tea table and pour the infusion into it before serving. The broad cobalt interior gathers the tea, while the deep blue, violet and iron-brown firing marks bring a dramatic, elemental presence to the moment of sharing.

One of a kind. Shino stoneware shaped by hand and wood-fired; glaze patterns and firing marks vary with the kiln.
