The Void and the Light — Shino Wood-Fired Chawan

Substantial, quiet and deeply grounded, this Shino wood-fired chawan has an unusually high level of finish. The glaze is complete across both the interior and exterior, giving the bowl a cohesive, carefully resolved presence from the inside of the drinking surface to the outer walls and foot.

Its exceptionally thick, weighty body gives it a strong sense of permanence in the hand. Rather than feeling delicate, it has the reassuring heft of an old vessel made to be held, used and kept. The generous clay body also gives the bowl a calm, solid silhouette that feels especially suited to unhurried tea sessions.

What makes this piece distinctive is its ancient, almost archaeological character. The fully glazed surface and heavy construction come together with the wood-fired Shino finish to create something that feels timeworn and elemental, while still showing a very high degree of completion and care.
