The Iron Shore
This cup is forged from darkness. The exterior is blanketed in a deep, iron-rich glaze — near-black at its densest, breaking into warm brown and scattered white where the wood-fire has touched it most directly. Across the surface, white speckles and pale patches emerge like sea foam on dark rock, or lichen on ancient stone. The interior is quieter: a pale, ash-white glaze, smooth and luminous, that catches the light and holds it. It is a cup of contrasts — the raw, volcanic exterior and the calm, open interior — and of the particular beauty that only fire can make.
Glaze & Surface
The exterior carries a dense iron glaze — deep brown-black, with white speckles and pale patches distributed across the surface where the glaze has thinned or the ash has settled. The texture is fine and pitted, with a tactile quality that rewards handling. The rim is raw and irregular, with the glaze pooling and darkening at the edge. The interior is covered in a pale ash-white Shino glaze — smooth, even, and softly luminous — a calm counterpoint to the drama of the exterior.
Form & Feel
- Cylindrical form — upright and direct
- Compact and well-balanced in the hand
- Smooth interior glaze — pleasant to drink from
- Richly textured exterior — deeply satisfying to hold
The Wood-Fire
This cup was fired in a wood-burning kiln, where flame, ash, and atmosphere work directly on the clay and glaze. The iron-rich exterior glaze responds to the kiln's heat and chemistry in ways that cannot be predicted or controlled — the white speckles, the tonal variation, the raw rim are all signatures of the process. This is a cup that could only have been made this way, in this firing, never to be repeated.
For the collector drawn to darkness and depth. A cup that is most itself in low light, held in both hands. One of a kind, never to be repeated.
Care
Suitable for contact with tea. Hand wash gently and avoid abrasive cleaners. Variations and firing marks are part of this one-of-a-kind handmade piece.
