Midnight Ocean in Your Hands
This Shino wood-fired teacup is a portal to another world. Hold it up to the light and the interior blazes with deep cobalt blue, electric teal, and midnight black — a swirling, crackled galaxy that seems to shift and breathe with every angle. It is one of the most visually distinctive cups to come from the kiln, and one that will stop anyone in their tracks.
Glaze & Surface
The exterior is a richly textured landscape of warm earth tones — deep brown, sandy beige, and patches of crawled white Shino glaze — punctuated by a dramatic band of iridescent blue-black that wraps around the upper body like a horizon line. The glaze is heavily blistered and pitted, with a raw, geological quality that contrasts beautifully with the luminous interior. The rim is smooth and warm, a rich chestnut brown that invites the lips. The interior provides a clear contrast: a layered mosaic of deep cobalt blue, electric teal, and warm amber, all fractured by a bold network of dark crackle lines — like a stained-glass window, or the surface of a frozen lake lit from below.
Form & Feel
- Rounded, slightly barrel-shaped yunomi form with a gently flared rim
- Compact and palm-sized — comfortable in one hand
- Thick walls with excellent heat retention
- Heavily textured exterior — tactile and grounding to hold
The Blue That Cannot Be Planned
The distinctive blue of this cup's interior is not a pigment — it is the result of iron and copper compounds in the clay reacting with the wood-fire atmosphere at peak temperature. It cannot be replicated, predicted, or controlled. Every cup that emerges with this depth of blue is a specific to this firing gift from the kiln.
For the collector who seeks the distinctive in the everyday. A cup that transforms the tea ritual into something transcendent.
Care
Suitable for contact with tea. Hand wash gently and avoid abrasive cleaners. Variations and firing marks are part of this one-of-a-kind handmade piece.
