Molten Earth — Born of Fire, Shaped by Chance

This is a cup that makes no apologies. Thick, raw, and elemental — its surface reads like the face of a newly cooled lava field, pocked and crusted with mineral eruptions, glazed in deep olive-brown with scattered bursts of white and gold where the ash and iron collided in the kiln. It is one of the most primally beautiful pieces in this collection, and one of the most honest.

Glaze & Surface: The exterior is covered in a dense, heavily textured volcanic glaze — deep olive, umber, and iron-brown layered over a dark stoneware body. Across this ground, white and golden-ochre mineral deposits have erupted and pooled in irregular clusters, like mineral springs frozen mid-flow or meteorite impacts captured in glaze. Countless tiny craters and pinholes cover the surface, each one a record of the gases escaping the clay body during the wood firing. The rim is thick and hand-pinched, its edge dark and metallic. The interior is raw and earthy — deep reddish-brown, with visible throwing lines where the clay was shaped, and minimal glaze coverage that keeps the focus on the clay itself.

Form & Feel:

  • Compact, slightly barrel-shaped form — straight-sided with a gentle waist
  • Thick walls and a substantial rim — honest and unrefined
  • 305g weight — dense and grounding in the hands
  • Irregular, hand-formed base — a natural outcome of the wood-firing process; the cup sits with its own quiet character
  • Unglazed stoneware base reveals the raw dark clay beneath

A Note on Imperfection: The base of this cup is irregular — not perfectly round, with natural glaze accumulation along the bottom edge from the kiln firing. This is not a flaw to be hidden; it is the direct record of how this cup came to exist. In the wabi-sabi tradition, the irregular, the impermanent, and the incomplete are where beauty lives. This cup sits firmly and functions perfectly — it simply does so on its own terms.

For the Art of Tea: A cup for those who prefer their tea experience unvarnished. The thick walls hold heat exceptionally well, making it ideal for slow sipping — pu-erh, aged oolong, or a dark roasted hojicha. Hold it with both hands and feel the weight of the earth.

One of a kind. Wood-fired in a single kiln firing. Never to be repeated.
