First Snow on Dark Earth

This is one of the most visually arresting cups to come from the kiln — a Shino wood-fired teacup covered in a striking snowflake glaze that looks as though the first winter frost has settled permanently into the clay. It is delicate in appearance, powerful in presence.

Glaze & Surface

The exterior is blanketed in a classic Shino crawled glaze — thick, pillowy islands of milky white and pale grey glaze separated by deep rust-brown and dark iron lines, creating a pattern that resembles snow-covered cobblestones or the cracked surface of a frozen lake. The glaze is three-dimensional and tactile, with each white island slightly raised and rounded. A warm chestnut-brown rim crowns the cup, smooth and refined against the textured body. The interior is equally vivid: a dramatic pattern of bold white crackle lines radiates from a dark centre pool, like lightning frozen in ceramic — or the view of a frozen river from above.

Form & Feel

  • Sturdy, cylindrical yunomi form with a slightly rounded body
  • Comfortable to hold — the textured exterior provides a natural grip
  • Thick walls with excellent heat retention
  • Smooth, warm brown rim — pleasant against the lips

A Collector's Glaze

The snowflake or "yuki" Shino glaze is one of the most sought-after effects in wood-fire ceramics. It requires precise clay chemistry, kiln atmosphere, and temperature — and even then, it cannot be fully controlled. Each cup that emerges with this glaze is a rare gift from the fire.

For the collector who appreciates the distinctive. A cup that tells the story of winter, fire, and time.

Care

Suitable for contact with tea. Hand wash gently and avoid abrasive cleaners. Variations and firing marks are part of this one-of-a-kind handmade piece.
