White Avalanche
This cup arrived from the kiln looking as though a slow avalanche of white glaze had swept down its sides and frozen mid-movement — thick rivers of milky Shino pooling and spreading over a landscape of dense, rounded glaze nodules, each one distinct and tactile, like barnacles on a sea rock or lichen on ancient stone. It is a cup of distinctive texture and presence, one that rewards slow looking and slow drinking in equal measure.
Glaze & Surface
The exterior is a dramatic interplay of two glaze effects: large, flowing sheets of thick white Shino glaze that cascade down the body in slow, frozen rivers — and beneath and around them, a dense field of small, rounded glaze nodules in cream, beige, and pale grey, each one raised and distinct. Between the nodules, dark iron-brown clay body shows through, grounding the composition. Occasional flashes of pale blue appear where the atmosphere of the kiln touched the glaze at just the right moment. The rim is smooth and rounded, glazed in a continuous band of white with dark iron speckles — clean and refined. The interior is a study in restraint: a luminous, near-pure white Shino ground, lightly speckled with iron, smooth and inviting.
Form & Feel
- Square-shouldered, barrel-shaped form with a strong, upright presence
- Substantial weight with excellent heat retention
- Deeply textured exterior — endlessly tactile to hold and explore
- Smooth, clean interior — a calm contrast to the wild exterior
The Shino Crawl
The nodular crawled glaze on this cup forms when the glaze contracts during firing, pulling into rounded islands and leaving channels of exposed clay between them. Combined with the flowing Shino rivers above, the result is a surface of distinctive complexity — one that took the kiln, the clay, and the fire working together in perfect, unrepeatable harmony.
A cup for those who find the distinctive in texture and touch. One of a kind, never to be repeated.
Care
Suitable for contact with tea. Hand wash gently and avoid abrasive cleaners. Variations and firing marks are part of this one-of-a-kind handmade piece.
