Rain on White Stone

This Shino wood-fired teacup is a study in quiet drama. At first glance it appears almost serene — a pale, speckled body dusted with iron flecks like granite in morning light. Then the blue catches your eye: rivulets of cobalt and indigo cascading down from the rim like rain on white stone, pooling and branching as they fall. And when you look inside, the cup reveals its true secret — a dense, intricate network of dark crackle lines spreading across a white ground like the bare branches of a winter tree, or the veins of a leaf held up to the sun.

Glaze & Surface

The exterior is a classic Shino white — thick, matte, and heavily speckled with iron oxide — interrupted by dramatic drips and washes of cobalt blue that flow freely from rim to base. The glaze surface is richly textured: pitted, blistered, and alive with the marks of the fire. The rim is smooth and rounded, glazed in a continuous band of blue and white. The interior is distinctive: a luminous white Shino ground covered in a bold, branching network of dark iron crackle lines — dense at the walls, opening toward the centre — like a map of rivers seen from above.

Form & Feel

  • Sturdy, slightly tapered cylindrical form — upright and confident
  • Comfortable to hold — fits naturally in the palm
  • Thick walls with excellent heat retention
  • Heavily textured lower body — raw and tactile

The Crackle That Cannot Be Forced

The dramatic crackle pattern inside this cup forms as the glaze cools and contracts at a different rate than the clay body. It cannot be controlled or predicted — only invited. Each cup that emerges with this density and clarity of crackle is a specific to this firing result of chemistry, temperature, and time.

A cup for the contemplative tea drinker. One of a kind, never to be repeated.

Care

Suitable for contact with tea. Hand wash gently and avoid abrasive cleaners. Variations and firing marks are part of this one-of-a-kind handmade piece.
