Midnight Bay — Where Fire Meets the Deep
Low, wide, and luminous, this Shino wood-fired teacup holds the mood of a dark harbour at night — cobalt depths swirling beneath a surface scattered with white. It is a cup that settles in the palm like a stone warmed by the sun, inviting stillness before the first sip.
Glaze & Surface: The exterior is dressed in a rich, layered glaze of deep navy and black, across which white ash glaze has splashed and pooled in great drifting patches — like surf breaking on a dark shore, or snow falling into still water. The cobalt breaks through in luminous veins where the kiln's heat was most intense. A band of raw iron-brown clay rings the shoulder where the glaze ends, forming a natural, unadorned border that grounds the piece. The interior opens wide in deep midnight blue, with white glaze islands floating across the surface and gathering at the base in a quiet pool.
Form & Feel:
- Wide, open chawan-bowl form — broad and low, ideal for savouring aroma
- Gently inward-curved rim with a natural raw clay edge — tactile and honest
- Rounded belly with a compact, stable base
- Unglazed foot ring reveals the raw dark stoneware beneath
For the Art of Tea: The chawan form has been central to Japanese tea ceremony for centuries — designed to be cradled with both hands, rotated slowly, and appreciated in full before drinking. This cup honours that tradition while carrying its own wild, fire-born character. Use it for matcha, gongfu cha, or a solitary cup of oolong on a quiet evening.
One of a kind. Wood-fired in a single kiln firing. Never to be repeated.
Care
