Deep Blue Fire

There are cups that hold tea. And then there are cups that hold the night sky. This Shino wood-fired chawan is one of the latter — a vessel so saturated with deep cobalt blue, midnight black, and luminous white that it seems to contain its own light source. Hold it in both hands and you feel the weight of something elemental: the compressed energy of a kiln at peak temperature, the alchemy of copper and iron reacting with wood smoke and flame, frozen forever in a glaze that no human hand could have planned or predicted.

Glaze & Surface

The exterior is a dramatic, fully saturated field of deep cobalt blue and dark iron-black, punctuated by eruptions of white Shino glaze that burst through the surface like stars through cloud cover — or like white-hot lava breaking through dark rock. The glaze is richly textured: blistered, pitted, and alive with the marks of the fire. The rim is raw and uneven, encrusted with glaze that has bubbled and frozen mid-movement, dark and iridescent. The interior provides a clear contrast: a swirling, luminous world of deep cobalt blue and brilliant white — smooth, glossy, and striking — like looking into a deep ocean pool lit from below, or a night sky reflected in still water. White islands of Shino float and drift across the blue ground, each one unique, each one unrepeatable.

Form & Feel

  • Low, wide chawan form with an irregular, hand-shaped rim — raw and powerful
  • Substantial weight with excellent heat retention
  • Richly textured exterior — deeply tactile and grounding
  • Smooth, luminous interior — a world unto itself

The Blue That Cannot Be Made

The distinctive cobalt blue of this cup is not a pigment applied by hand — it is the result of copper and iron compounds in the clay and glaze reacting with the wood-fire atmosphere at peak temperature. It cannot be mixed, ordered, or reproduced. Every cup that emerges from the kiln with this depth and saturation of blue is a specific to this firing event — a gift from the fire.

For the collector who seeks the transcendent. A cup that brings a strong visual presence to a tea session with the cosmos.

Care

Suitable for contact with tea. Hand wash gently and avoid abrasive cleaners. Variations and firing marks are part of this one-of-a-kind handmade piece.
