Stone, Shadow, and Snow

This Shino wood-fired teacup is a study in dramatic contrast — a piece that looks as though it was carved from volcanic rock and then kissed by the first snow. Dark, brooding, and quietly magnificent, it is a cup that transforms the act of drinking tea into something ceremonial.

Glaze & Surface

The exterior is a rugged, heavily textured landscape of deep charcoal black and dark grey, encrusted with a crawled and blistered glaze that resembles the surface of cooling lava. Patches of silvery-white ash glaze break through the darkness like moonlight on stone. A warm copper-brown rim traces the lip of the cup, adding a refined edge to the raw exterior. The interior provides a clear contrast: a luminous pool of milky white Shino glaze, crackled with fine rust-red lines — like ice fracturing over dark water — surrounded by a dramatic ring of black and grey that deepens toward the walls.

Form & Feel

  • Low, wide chawan-inspired form — squat and grounded, made to be cradled
  • Heavily textured, sculptural exterior with deep pitting and glaze blistering
  • Thick walls with excellent heat retention
  • Warm copper-toned rim — a refined contrast to the dark body

The Shino Tradition

Shino is one of Japan's oldest and most revered ceramic traditions, prized for its unpredictable, deeply textured surfaces and the way it captures the spirit of wabi-sabi — finding beauty in imperfection and impermanence. This cup embodies that tradition fully: no two firings, no two cups, are ever the same.

A meditative vessel for your daily tea practice. One of a kind, never to be repeated.

Care

Suitable for contact with tea. Hand wash gently and avoid abrasive cleaners. Variations and firing marks are part of this one-of-a-kind handmade piece.
